A first-session clarity checklist we reuse on every onboarding review

Five questions we ask while walking a brand-new user path — useful before you redesign anything.

First sessions set the tone for whether someone trusts your app with a second visit. Our onboarding assessments use a fixed clarity checklist so findings stay comparable across projects.

One: can a newcomer name the primary job within thirty seconds of landing? Two: does every permission request explain a concrete benefit before asking? Three: is the first valuable outcome reachable without creating an account, or is account creation clearly the value itself?

Four: when something fails — wrong OTP, denied camera — does the path recover without a dead end? Five: does the session end with a reason to return tomorrow, not only a generic home screen?

Walk those five questions with a colleague who has never used the product. Note where answers diverge. Those divergences are usually where session quality frays, long before you invest in a full redesign.
